The Sinks: Tennessee's Most Powerful Roadside Waterfall

If you’re road-tripping through the Great Smoky Mountains and craving a quick waterfall stop without a long hike, The Sinks is your go-to destination. Tucked just off Little River Road between Metcalf Bottoms and Elkmont, this explosive cascade is one of the few waterfalls in the Smokies you can drive right up to.

A Waterfall with a Violent Past

The Sinks isn’t your average cascade. According to park lore, this dramatic feature was formed in the late 1800s when a massive log jam—caused by intense logging in the area—was blown apart with dynamite. The result? A powerful plunge of water that churns into a swirling, deep pool below.

    What to Expect When Visiting

    • 📍 Location: Along Little River Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

    • 🚗 Accessibility: Fully roadside—no hiking required

    • 📸 Photo Tip: Best lighting is mid-morning or late afternoon

    • ⚠️ Safety Warning: Swimming is extremely dangerous here due to strong currents and underwater hazards. Enjoy from the overlook only.

While The Sinks is often just a quick stop for travelers, it’s well worth a few extra minutes to marvel at the force of the water and enjoy the surrounding forest. Plus, it makes a great addition to any Smoky Mountain waterfall tour.
