If you’re searching for a serene waterfall hike away from the crowds, Kilby Mill Falls might just be the escape you didn’t know you needed. Located in Rabun County, this lesser-known waterfall is nestled off the beaten path and offers a peaceful, rustic view into Georgia's Appalachian foothills.
Kilby Mill Falls is located near the unincorporated community of Dillard, Georgia, just a short drive from the North Carolina border. The area is rich with rolling hills, creeks, and old-growth forests—perfect for a quiet day of exploration.
GPS coordinates for trailhead (approximate):
📍 34.9674° N, 83.3798° W
Note: Access may involve a mix of gravel roads and short off-trail navigation. A physical map or offline GPS app is strongly recommended.
The waterfall itself is around 30 feet tall, gently spilling over a mossy rock face surrounded by hardwoods and native mountain laurel. It isn’t dramatic in size, but Kilby Mill Falls makes up for it with its secluded charm and photogenic setting, especially during late spring and early fall.
Because it’s not heavily trafficked, you might have the entire area to yourself. It’s a great location for photographers, nature lovers, and those looking to get off the grid for a few hours.
The hike to Kilby Mill Falls is unofficial and unmaintained, so be prepared for a short bushwhack through lightly trodden forest paths. Round-trip distance is under a mile but can be tricky to navigate. Sturdy boots, bug spray, and basic backcountry awareness are a must.
You'll likely hear the falls before you see them, as the sound of water cuts through the silence of the woods. Follow the water’s sound downhill to reach the base of the falls.
The falls are named after the nearby historic Kilby Mill, a 19th-century water-powered mill that once served the local farming community. Though the mill no longer stands, remnants of old foundations and millstones can sometimes be spotted near the area—offering a small window into Georgia’s rural past.
Trail Difficulty: Moderate (unmarked trail)
Distance: ~0.8 mile round trip
Best Time to Visit: Spring or after rainfall for good water flow
Dog Friendly: Yes, but keep pets leashed
Cell Signal: Very limited—download maps ahead of time
