Trahlyta’s Grave now sits in the center of a roundabout near Vogel State Park, making it one of the most unique roadside memorials in Georgia. While you can’t park right beside it anymore, the stone mound is clearly visible as you drive through the roundabout—and still serves as a meaningful landmark for those traveling through the North Georgia mountains.
Legend has it that Trahlyta’s tribe guarded the secrets of a magic spring that granted eternal youth and beauty. This spring is believed to be Porter Springs, located about ¾ mile northeast of her burial site. Trahlyta, famed for her beauty, was kidnapped by a jealous suitor, and taken far from home. Away from the magic waters, she lost her youthful glow and beauty.
Upon her death, Trahlyta was laid to rest near her mountain home. Over time, it became a custom for passersby to drop a stone on her grave as a gesture for good fortune and to honor her memory.
A few years ago, to accommodate modern traffic needs, a traffic circle (roundabout) was built around Trahlyta’s Grave, preserving this sacred site while allowing travelers to continue seeing this historic and cultural landmark near Vogel State Park.
