Tucked deep in the heart of the Cohutta Wilderness, Jacks River Falls is one of Georgia’s most rewarding and rugged waterfall hikes. This double-drop cascade is a favorite destination for seasoned backpackers and adventurous hikers seeking a true backcountry waterfall experience.

Reaching the falls isn’t easy—but for those willing to put in the miles (and river crossings), it’s one of the most beautiful and isolated destinations in the North Georgia mountains.

Why Jacks River Falls Is Worth the Trek

    💧 Stunning Double Waterfall

Set along the wild and scenic Jacks River, the falls feature two distinct drops surrounded by dense forest and rocky cliffs. The pool below the falls is a popular spot to cool off in the summer and one of the most photogenic spots in the Cohutta.

    🥾 Adventure-Filled Trail Options

The most popular route to the falls is via the Jacks River Trail from Dally Gap, which includes 18 river crossings (one-way)—yes, you read that right! Be ready to get your feet wet and bring water shoes or trekking poles for safety.

    Other approaches include:

    • Beech Bottom Trail (less technical, ~9 miles round trip)

    • Penitentiary Branch Trail (more strenuous and less crowded)

    Know Before You Go

    • Trailhead Access: Dally Gap or Beech Bottom Trailhead (both via forest service roads—high-clearance recommended)

    • Trail Length: ~9 to 16 miles round trip depending on route

    • Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous

    • Best Time to Go: Late spring to early fall (but check river levels—crossings can be dangerous after heavy rain)

    • Camping: Dispersed camping allowed; follow Leave No Trace

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Permits are not required, but group size is limited to 10 people max in the Cohutta Wilderness.

Tips for Visiting Jacks River Falls

    • Don’t go alone – It’s remote and river conditions can change fast

    • Bring extra socks and dry bags – Your gear will get wet

    • Avoid flash floods – Check weather and river flow conditions

    • Start early – This is an all-day hike, especially with photo stops or swims

    Combine With Nearby Trails

Make it a weekend by combining your Jacks River Falls visit with:

    • A night at Lake Conasauga

    • A side trip to Panther Creek Falls (Cohutta version)

    • A scenic drive through Fort Mountain State Park
