Looking for a truly one-of-a-kind waterfall experience in the Southeast? You won’t find anything quite like Ruby Falls, a stunning 145-foot waterfall located deep inside Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. It’s one of the most popular natural attractions in the state, and for good reason—it’s the tallest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public in the U.S.
Whether you're traveling with kids, planning a road trip through Tennessee, or just chasing unique experiences, Ruby Falls is a must-see stop that blends geology, history, and natural beauty.
Ruby Falls isn’t your typical hike-in waterfall—it’s located 1,120 feet beneath the surface of Lookout Mountain. To reach it, you’ll take an elevator down into a vast limestone cave system, then walk about half a mile on a guided tour through narrow passages and stunning underground formations.
At the end of the tour, you’re rewarded with a view of Ruby Falls cascading from the cave ceiling, dramatically lit and roaring in the darkness. It’s a surreal sight you won’t soon forget.
The falls were discovered in 1928 by Leo Lambert, who named them after his wife, Ruby. Since then, the site has welcomed millions of visitors and is considered one of Tennessee’s top tourist attractions.
