If you're looking for a waterfall hike that’s both easy to access and wildly underrated, add Shadow Falls to your North Georgia bucket list. Just minutes from Lake Rabun and the charming town of Lakemont, this peaceful spot offers a refreshing escape into nature without the crowds.
Shadow Falls may be small, but it packs scenic punch—especially after a rainstorm, when the falls flow strong and the forest hums with life.
Shadow Falls is located in Rabun County, not far from Lake Rabun Road and Bear Gap Road—a winding, forest-lined drive known for its beauty and access to several other natural attractions.
The hike starts just off Lake Rabun Road, making it a convenient detour if you’re already visiting other popular spots nearby.
It’s only a short walk (under half a mile round trip), making it a perfect stop for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking to stretch their legs between waterfall stops.
Shadow Falls is a 20-foot cascading waterfall that gently spills over a rocky ledge into a small, clear pool below. Surrounded by ferns, rhododendron, and dense hardwood forest, it feels almost enchanted—especially on misty mornings or in the dappled afternoon light.
The name “Shadow Falls” likely comes from the way sunlight filters through the canopy above, casting moving patterns of light and shade on the rocks and water below.
Trail length: ~0.4 mile round trip
Difficulty: Easy
Trail conditions: Narrow but well-worn; can be muddy after rain
Dog-friendly: Yes, on leash
Best time to visit: Spring through fall
You’ll cross a small creek and follow the sound of flowing water until you reach the falls. There’s a short, steep section near the end, but overall, the hike is accessible and rewarding.
Make the most of your visit to the area by checking out these nearby attractions:
Minnehaha Falls – Just a short drive from Shadow Falls, this is one of Georgia’s most photogenic and beloved waterfalls. (Only 0.4 miles round-trip!)
Lake Rabun Beach & Campground – Relax by the lake, enjoy a picnic, or stay overnight to explore more.
Tallulah Gorge State Park – Less than 15 minutes away, this iconic park features dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and 1,000+ stairs worth of adventure.
Lakemont Village – A charming stop for local art, antiques, and snacks. Perfect for a post-hike stroll.
Panther Falls & Angel Falls – Located near Lake Rabun as well, this double-waterfall hike is about 1.7 miles round trip and absolutely worth the effort.
While Shadow Falls is easy to access, many of North Georgia’s best waterfalls remain off the radar—and that’s where our expert-curated hiking guides come in.
