Tucked away in the North Georgia mountains, Vogel State Park is one of the state’s oldest and most beloved outdoor destinations. Established in 1931, Vogel offers visitors a chance to step into the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest and experience everything from peaceful lakeside strolls to challenging hikes into the mountains.
The highlight for many waterfall chasers at Vogel is Trahlyta Falls, an easy-to-reach cascade located just below Lake Trahlyta’s dam. The water spills gracefully over a series of rocks, creating a wide and photogenic waterfall that is especially beautiful in spring and fall.
A 0.9-mile loop trail circles Lake Trahlyta and leads to a viewing platform for the falls, making it accessible for families, casual hikers, and anyone looking for a quick adventure. The surrounding forest and mountain backdrop make Trahlyta Falls one of the most photographed waterfalls in North Georgia.
Beyond the waterfall, Vogel State Park is a hub for hiking. Some of the most popular trails include:
Bear Hair Gap Trail (4.1 miles): A moderate loop trail offering stunning overlooks of Lake Trahlyta and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
Byron Herbert Reece Trail (2 miles): A short but steep climb that connects to the Appalachian Trail and Blood Mountain.
Lake Trahlyta Trail (0.9 miles): An easy loop with waterfall access, great for a relaxed walk or family outing.
Whether you’re after a quick hike or a full-day trek, Vogel’s trail system provides options for all skill levels.
Lake Activities: Paddle boats, kayaks, and fishing make Lake Trahlyta a perfect centerpiece for your visit.
Picnicking & Camping: Vogel offers picnic shelters and a full campground with tent and RV sites.
Fall Colors: The park is one of Georgia’s most popular fall destinations, with vibrant foliage drawing crowds every October.
Vogel State Park is located about 11 miles south of Blairsville, Georgia, along U.S. Highway 19/129. Parking is available at the main visitor area, with easy access to the lake, trails, and picnic spots.
If you’re chasing waterfalls across the state, don’t stop with Trahlyta Falls. Our Waterfalls of Georgia Guide includes directions, trail info, and insider tips to help you uncover hidden gems and must-see cascades all over the region.
